Amatyakaraka calculator
Find your amatyakaraka: of the seven planets, the one at the second-highest degree in its sign, just after your atmakaraka. Amatya means minister, and classical astrology compares the atmakaraka to a king. Most astrologers today read the amatyakaraka for work and counsel.
Date and place of birth. Add the time if you know it: the Moon can change the answer within a day, and the time adds each planet's house.
What the amatyakaraka is
Classical astrology ranks the seven planets, the Sun to Saturn, by how far each has travelled through its own sign. The planet furthest along is the atmakaraka, which the classical texts compare to a king. The next one down is the amatyakaraka, named for the minister.
The classical texts add that the other planets in the ranking can no more overrule the atmakaraka than a minister can overrule a king. In our reading, that makes the amatyakaraka the second voice in your chart: the one that advises and gets the work done.
Why we read it for work
Classical astrologers gave the amatyakaraka a part in their combinations for office. When it joins or looks at the lord of the 10th house, the house of your trade and reputation, or sits strong in its own sign or its sign of exaltation, they read a place in a king’s service.
They wrote for a world of kings and ministers. In modern terms, we read it as the kind of work you tend to be trusted with: the job that runs on your judgement, or the colleague whose advice gets taken.
Your amatyakaraka, planet by planet
Each planet brings its own nature to the role. The middle column is the planet’s meaning in classical astrology. The last is our reading of how it tends to show at work.
| Amatyakaraka | Its classical meaning | How it tends to show at work |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | the soul | Work where you are seen to lead: taking the decision, and owning it. |
| Moon | the mind | The colleague who reads the room and keeps the team steady. |
| Mars | strength | Work with a contest in it: deadlines, building, fixing what broke. |
| Mercury | speech | Words and numbers: writing, selling, teaching, the deal on paper. |
| Jupiter | knowledge and happiness | The one people ask, whether that means teaching, judging or advising. |
| Venus | desire and beauty | Making things look and feel right, and bringing people together. |
| Saturn | grief, and what endures it | The job done steadily, year after year, in systems and upkeep. |
None of these is better than another: a Saturn amatyakaraka and a Jupiter one tend to work in different ways.
Why the time matters
The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so it can climb past another planet in the ranking within hours. Without a time, we show both answers when your birthday is split. With a time, the result also shows the house each planet sits in.

Open the sample readingHow do I find my amatyakaraka?
Enter your birth date and place above. Of the seven planets, the Sun to Saturn, the one at the second-highest degree within its sign is your amatyakaraka. The planet at the highest degree is your atmakaraka.
Which planet can be the amatyakaraka?
Any of the seven, the Sun to Saturn. It is chosen by degree within the sign, so it changes from chart to chart.
What is the difference between the atmakaraka and the amatyakaraka?
The atmakaraka is first in the ranking and is compared to the king of the chart. The amatyakaraka is second and is named for the minister: in our reading, the planet that advises and does the work.
Is the amatyakaraka the same as the 10th lord?
No. The 10th lord rules the sign on your 10th house. The amatyakaraka is picked by degree. Classical astrologers read the two together: the amatyakaraka joining the 10th lord is one of their combinations for office.
What career suits my amatyakaraka?
Its planet points to the way you tend to work best. A Mercury amatyakaraka suits words, numbers and selling, a Jupiter one teaching and advising, a Saturn one systems and long projects. The table above has all seven. Many jobs fit each planet, so it points to a kind of work rather than one title.
Why does another site show a different amatyakaraka?
Usually because the other site counts eight karakas, with Rahu, or uses a different ayanamsa, the setting that fixes where the Vedic zodiac starts. We use seven planets and the Lahiri ayanamsa.
