What house is my planet in?

Enter your birth details and see which house each planet sits in: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the two shadow planets, Rahu and Ketu. Each house is one part of life, so the answer shows where each planet tends to do its work, with a line on each and our full article where we have written one.

Date, exact time and place of birth. Houses turn with the clock: about every two hours, every planet moves one house along.

What the twelve houses are

Your chart is split into twelve houses, one for each part of life. A planet sitting in a house is read as working through that part of life: Venus in the 10th tends to show at work, Venus in the 4th at home.

Here is what each house covers, in our words.

HouseWhat it covers
1st houseHow you come across, your health and your peace
2nd houseMoney you keep, the way you speak, the family table
3rd houseCourage, brothers and sisters, messages, short trips, skills you teach yourself
4th houseHome, your mother, comfort, a settled mind
5th houseMaking things, learning for its own sake, children, deep thought
6th houseDaily work, routines, rivals and debts
7th houseYour partner, clients and contracts
8th houseShared money, upheaval and what keeps you steady, things kept private
9th houseFortune, teachers, faith and long journeys
10th houseWork, reputation and standing
11th houseGains, income, networks and hopes
12th houseSpending, sleep, time alone and far places

Why your house can differ from a Western app

Most Western apps cut the houses with a system called Placidus, which divides the sky by time. Vedic astrology gives each house one whole sign, counted from your rising sign. The two often agree, but near the edge of a house a planet can land one house apart. Western sites that use whole-sign houses will usually match us.

The Vedic zodiac also starts about 24 degrees earlier, so your signs may move back one. Neither answer is a mistake: they measure from different starting points.

Why the time matters

The rising sign changes about every two hours, and every planet's house changes with it. A time from your birth record gives a steady answer. A rough time can put a planet one house off, so if your time is a guess, read the houses as a guess too.

If you only know the date, the free Vedic birth chart still shows every planet's sign.

What house is my Venus in?

It depends on your exact birth time, and the calculator above names it. Venus is the planet of taste, love and the good things, so its house tends to show where those gather: in the 7th, a partner; in the 10th, work; in the 4th, home.

What house is my Saturn in?

Enter your birth details above to find it. Saturn is the planet of patience and what lasts, so its house tends to show where life asks for slow, steady effort, and where that effort pays off over years.

What house is my Jupiter in?

The calculator above names it. Jupiter is the planet of learning and good judgement, so its house tends to show where you grow most, and where good advice tends to come from.

What house is my Sun in?

The calculator above names it. The Sun is the planet of confidence and taking charge, so its house tends to show where you want to be seen, and where you would put your name to the work.

What house is my Moon in?

The calculator above names it. The Moon is the planet of moods, rest and care, so its house tends to show where you look for comfort and where your feelings run closest to the surface.

What house is my north node in?

In Vedic astrology the north node is Rahu, one of the two shadow planets, and the calculator above shows its house. Rahu's house tends to show where your appetite for more, and for the unfamiliar, pulls you. The south node, Ketu, always sits directly opposite, six houses away.

What house are my Mars and Mercury in?

Both are in the answer above. Mars is drive and courage: its house tends to show where you push hardest. Mercury is thinking, talking and writing: its house tends to show where you do most of your dealings.

Why is my house different from my Western chart?

Usually because the Western chart uses Placidus houses and we use whole-sign houses, the Vedic way. Near the edge of a house, the two can put a planet one house apart. The Vedic zodiac also starts about 24 degrees earlier.

Do I need my exact birth time?

Yes. Houses turn about every two hours, so the time decides them. Use the time on your birth record if you have it.
