What the darakaraka is
Classical astrology ranks the seven planets, the Sun to Saturn, by how far each has travelled through its own sign. The highest is the atmakaraka, the next the amatyakaraka, and so on down.
The last, at the lowest degree, is the stree karaka, the significator of the spouse. Darakaraka is the later name for it, from dara, spouse.
What it can and can’t tell you
It names a planet, and classical astrology gives every planet its own part of inner life: the Moon the mind, Venus desire and beauty, Saturn grief and what endures it.
It does not describe a person you will marry, and we won’t dress it up as if it did. In our view, read it as the part of you a close partnership calls on most.
Why the time matters
The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so it can overtake another planet in the ranking within hours. Without a time, we show both possibilities when the day is split.

No. The 7th house is a place in the chart; the darakaraka is a planet, picked by its degree. Classical astrology reads both for partnership.
Do Rahu and Ketu count?
Not here. We use the seven-planet scheme, the Sun to Saturn. Some astrologers add Rahu to make eight karakas; the classical text mentions both views.
Why is my darakaraka different on another site?
Usually because the other site counts eight karakas, with Rahu, or uses a different ayanamsa. We use seven planets and the Lahiri ayanamsa.
