Raj yoga calculator
Enter your birth details and see which classical yogas your chart holds: raja yogas, Gaja Kesari, Vipreet, Neecha Bhanga, Lakshmi and the five Mahapurusha yogas. For each one you see how strong it is, whether its period is running now or when it comes next, and how common it is.
Your date, time and place of birth. Most yogas hang on your rising sign, which changes about every two hours, so the time has to be exact.
What is a raj yoga?
A raj yoga (raja yoga) is a combination in the birth chart that classical astrologers linked with standing and a name in your field.
The main kind forms when the lord of an angle (your 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) and the lord of a trine (your 1st, 5th or 9th) are linked. They can:
- swap signs, each sitting in the sign the other rules
- sit together in the same sign
- face each other from opposite signs
A planet that rules an angle and a trine at once is called a yogakaraka. Taurus, Libra, Cancer, Leo, Capricorn and Aquarius rising each have one.
How common is raj yoga?
More common than most people are told. In our sample of 20,000 charts, about 8 in 10 have at least one raja yoga, and the average chart has 1.4. Half of all charts have a yogakaraka.
Some yogas are genuinely rare. Each of the five Mahapurusha yogas turns up in fewer than 1 in 10 charts, Lakshmi yoga in about 4 in 100, and Maha Raja yoga in about 2 in 100.
So having a raj yoga is ordinary. What changes the picture is how strong its planets are, and when their years come. That is what this calculator shows.

How strong is my raj yoga?
Classical astrology gives its own answer: a yoga gives its effects in full, by half or by a quarter, according to the strength of the planets that form it.
We measure that strength with shadbala, the classical six-fold strength, and compare it with what the classical texts ask of each planet:
- every planet of the yoga reaches it: full strength (100%)
- some of them do: half (50%)
- none of them do: a quarter (25%)
You also see each planet's own figure, such as Mars at 139% of what the texts ask.
When will my raj yoga activate?
Classical astrologers read a yoga's results in the periods of the planets that form it. That means their mahadasha, the long period of many years, and their antardasha, the shorter one inside another planet's years.
The calculator shows whether one of those periods is running now, and the dates of the next ones. These are the years the tradition says the yoga speaks loudest: a tendency to check against your life, not a promise of what will happen.
Which yogas does it check?
- Raja yoga, from the angle and trine lords, including Dharma-Karmadhipati (the 9th and 10th lords)
- Maha Raja yoga and your yogakaraka
- Gaja Kesari yoga, in its classical form and its popular one
- Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya and Sasa, the five Mahapurusha yogas
- Lakshmi yoga and Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga
- Vipreet Raja yoga, in its three forms: Harsha, Sarala and Vimala
- Budhaditya yoga, which astrologers use today but the classical texts we check don't name

Open the sample readingDoes everyone have a raj yoga?
Nearly. About 8 in 10 charts have at least one raja yoga by the classical rule of the angle and trine lords. That is why we show how strong each one is and when its period comes, not just its name.
Is Gaja Kesari yoga rare?
Less than people think. The popular form, Jupiter in an angle from the Moon, turns up in about a third of charts. The classical form also asks for a benefic with Jupiter, and Jupiter free of fall, combustion and an enemy's sign. That turns up in about 1 in 9.
What is Vipreet raj yoga?
It forms when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th house sits in one of those three houses, which classical astrology counts as hard. Each form has its own name: Harsha (the 6th lord), Sarala (the 8th) and Vimala (the 12th). Classical astrologers linked them with happiness, resolve and saving.
What is Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga?
Neecha means fall: a planet in the sign where it is weakest. Bhanga means broken. When the lord of that sign, or of the planet's exaltation sign, sits in an angle from your rising sign or your Moon, the fall is read as cancelled, and classical astrologers linked it with standing.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes. Most yogas depend on your rising sign and on which planet rules which house, and the rising sign changes about every two hours. A time out by a few minutes can move a yoga's dates, though it rarely changes the yoga itself.
A yoga names a possibility. The reading finds the pattern.
