What the rising sign is
As the Earth turns, each of the twelve signs rises over the eastern horizon in turn, about one every two hours. The sign rising at your birth is your ascendant, or lagna.
In classical Vedic astrology it is the starting point of the whole chart. It becomes your first house, and every other house is counted from it. That is why two people born on the same day, in the same city, can have very different charts.
Why the time must be exact
Your Sun sign stays the same for about a month, and your Moon sign for about two days. The lagna changes roughly every two hours, faster for some signs than others depending on where you were born.
If you were born near the change from one sign to the next, even ten or fifteen minutes can decide it. A time from a birth certificate or hospital record is best. If your time is a family memory, treat the result as a likely answer, not a certain one.
Vedic and Western rising signs
This calculator uses the sidereal zodiac of Vedic astrology (Lahiri). Western apps use the tropical zodiac, and the two are offset by about 24 degrees.
So for most people the Vedic rising sign is one sign earlier than the Western one: a Western Leo rising is often a Vedic Cancer rising. Both are measured from the same horizon at the same moment. They simply divide the sky from different starting points.
How to read your result
Classical astrology reads the lagna as the self: the body, the temperament, the way you meet the world. Its ruling planet, the lagna lord, is one of the most important planets in your chart, and where it sits is read closely.
Read your rising sign as the frame of the chart rather than a personality label. The planets in it, and its ruler, fill in the picture.
Questions people ask
Is lagna the same as the ascendant and the rising sign?
Yes. Lagna is the Sanskrit word; ascendant and rising sign are the English ones. All three mean the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. In Vedic astrology it is counted in the sidereal zodiac, so it can differ from a Western ascendant.
What is the difference between rising sign, Sun sign and Moon sign?
The Sun sign is where the Sun was, and changes about once a month. The Moon sign is where the Moon was, and changes about every two days. The rising sign is the sign on the eastern horizon, and changes about every two hours. Vedic astrology gives the Moon and the lagna more weight than the Sun.
I don't know my exact birth time. Can I still find my rising sign?

Why is my Vedic rising sign different from my Western one?
