Ketu in the 7th house

The 7th house is the house of marriage in your birth chart (kundli). It shows:

• your husband, wife or long-term partner
• love, dating and winning someone's heart
• trust and honesty between two people
• the arguments a couple has
• business partners and deals
• your shared home, and food and outings you enjoy together
• travel with a partner

In simple words, the 1st house is you, and the 7th house is the other person.

Ketu is one of the two shadow planets in Vedic astrology. Rahu and Ketu are not real planets. They are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path in the sky. They are always exactly opposite each other.

The classical books show Ketu as a body without a head. Rahu wants more. Ketu lets go. Ketu is linked with:

• detachment and letting go
• spirituality, meditation and silence
• deep questions about life
• a restless mind
• sudden luck after you let something go

One more point from the classical books: Ketu behaves like Mars. That means it can act quickly and sharply.

1. You may need more space than your partner. You might want an evening alone, a walk with no plan, or a weekend with your phone off. For you it is rest. Your partner may see it as you pulling away. Telling them before you take the space helps a lot.

2. The relationship can feel a little distant. Many people with this placement say their partner is kind and present, but something still feels far away. This usually gets better when you talk about the distance openly.

3. Your partner or marriage may not be the usual type. Ketu in the 7th often brings a partner from another city, culture or background, a long-distance phase, or a marriage that happens later than your family hoped. You may care more about freedom in a relationship than about fitting the expected picture.

4. Fights can end quickly, but badly. Because Ketu acts like Mars, an argument can go from one sharp word to silence very fast. Staying in the conversation until it is finished makes a real difference.

5. Business partnerships need clear roles. The 7th house also covers business partners. With Ketu here, you usually work best with a partner who has a separate job and leaves you your own space.

6. Letting go can bring good luck. Ketu often gives luck after you stop holding on. Many people find a better relationship, or a better version of their current one, once they drop the idea of how it "should" look.

It can be both. It depends on the sign Ketu is in and the rest of your chart.

The classical books are strict about this placement. One of them says a person with Ketu in the 7th may feel disrespected or not valued by others. But another classical reading is much kinder. When Ketu sits in one of the four main houses (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) in a friendly sign and is well supported, its period was said to bring happiness through your spouse and children.

So the same placement was never read only one way. The sign and the rest of your chart decide which side you feel more.

No, not on its own. About 1 in 12 people have Ketu in the 7th house, so it cannot decide anyone's marriage by itself. What it usually brings is a need for space, which a couple can talk about and plan for.

If Ketu is in your 7th house, Rahu is always in your 1st house. Together they show a common pattern. A lot of your attention goes to yourself and who you are becoming, and less goes to your partner. Neither side is wrong. The lesson of this pair is to keep both in balance.

Ketu does not rule any sign. So the useful thing to know is which sign Ketu sits in, and which planet rules that sign. Use your Vedic rising sign (lagna). The box above shows it. It is often one sign earlier than what a Western app gives you.

For Taurus and Libra rising, Ketu sits in a sign ruled by Mars. Since Ketu already acts like Mars, the sharp side is usually strongest here. For Gemini and Virgo rising, Ketu sits in a sign ruled by Jupiter, and the same distance often feels more like room to grow.

We checked 200,000 sample birth moments (from 1950 to 2008, across the US, UK and India). Ketu was in the 7th house in about 8 out of every 100 charts. That is close to 1 in 12, the same as any other house.

If a Western astrology app showed your south node (Ketu) in the 7th house, check again. The Vedic chart agrees for only about 48 out of 100 people. Almost as many have it in the 8th house instead. The two systems measure the zodiac differently, so the same sky can put Ketu in a different house.

A planet shows its results most during its own period (dasha).

• Ketu's main period (Ketu mahadasha) lasts 7 years.
• Every other planet's period has a shorter Ketu part inside it (Ketu antardasha).
• Ketu also moves through your 7th house again about every 18 years, for about a year and a half.

Here is what the classical books give for Ketu, followed by our simple modern way of doing it.

1. Ketu's prayer with kusha grass. In the classical worship of the nine planets, Ketu is honoured with sticks of kusha grass offered in the fire, with a Vedic verse that begins "Ketum krinvann". Our way: keep one fixed moment each week for a short prayer or a few minutes of quiet, at the same time, with the same words. Repeating it is the point.

2. Rice cooked with lentils. Ketu's food in the classical books is rice cooked with pulses, or coloured rice, given to others. Our way: cook a simple khichdi for you and your partner once a week, on the same evening, and eat it together.

3. Keeping silence. The classical books link Ketu with silence kept on purpose. Our way: agree on one quiet hour a week, phones in another room. When the space is agreed in advance, it no longer feels like pulling away.

4. Praying to Ganesha first. Ketu is linked with the worship of Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Our way: before any big decision as a couple (a move, a loan, a wedding date), each of you names the one thing standing in the way before you plan anything else.

5. Giving a goat. Ketu's classical gift was a goat, which in those days gave someone a way to earn a living. Our way: together, give one thing that helps someone earn, like a tool, a course fee or a laptop for a student.

The classical books also give Ketu a smoky colour, cloth of many colours, and a stone (lapis lazuli or turquoise). We don't sell stones or ask anyone to buy one.

It does not mean you will never marry. It does not mean your marriage will fail. And it does not mean you are "doomed", which many people online say they have been told. Ketu in the 7th is one placement out of many, and about 1 in 12 people have it.
